  • 6 Small Tweaks to Your Day to Feel Amazing Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and the entire day seems to go wrong? On the flip side, you can wake up in a great mood and that lasts throughout the rest of your day. Any other time, it’s just a normal day. Well, not anymore! You can do things throughout your day to make sure you feel positive and amazing! We only get this one life, so making sure we feel good as much as possible should be the goal! I’m sharing 6 small tweaks to your day to feel amazing! Sometimes, it just takes small changes to have an amazing impact. 6 Small Tweaks to Your Day to Feel Amazing #1 Wake up to something soothing I’m sorry, but there’s NO way I can wake up to a blaring alarm. Not only does that wake me up in a panic, but it naturally brings feelings of panic and rushing. Thankfully, my internal alarm clock wakes me up before my phone’s alarm. However, I always set my phone alarm just in case! When my alarm does wake me up, it’s the soothing sounds of bells. I also don’t set my volume very high, so the sound of the bells is loud enough to wake me up, but not loud enough to leave me feeling panicked. Waking up to something soothing sets the tone for the day. Everyone’s preference is different, so play around with different sounds. Bells, birds chirping, waves crashing, or any other soothing sound will beat a blaring alarm. #2 Take a different route on your commute I’m a Virgo. That means I’m structured and value routine. In terms of commuting, it usually means taking the same route wherever I go. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll be taking that routine route without even thinking about it. If I have time, I’ll try to switch up the route to whatever destination I’m going to. This makes me feel like I’m doing something different – even though I’m going to a familiar place. Changing up my normal route gives me a chance to notice different things. I can’t say this is a fact, but it definitely makes me feel sharper! If you commute to work or drive to the same place often, try taking a different route. It will make you feel like you incorporated something new and different into your day! #3 Give someone a compliment You’ve received a compliment before – how did it make you feel? Probably good, right?! Well, imagine if you can make someone else feel good. It seems like such a natural thing to keep to yourself, but spreading a little kindness can make you feel amazing. Not to mention, you never know what someone else is going through and how your compliment can pick them up. The next time you notice someone’s outfit, smile, car, or anything else, take the time to let them know. Giving someone a compliment can make you feel good all day long. I don’t recommend complimenting someone to get something in return. But, when you feel compelled to share the kind words, please do so. #4 Open the blinds or curtainsI absolutely love natural light. There’s just something about the way the sun lights up a room that makes me want to smile! Whether you’re working from home, getting tasks done or in the office, make it a point to open the blind or draw up the curtains! The natural light will bring an instant surge of energy and leave you feeling great! The City Girl Savings office space doesn’t have any windows. So, I did the next best thing! We (meaning my boyfriend with me watching) installed bright LED lights in the office space. It’s not as great as the sun’s light, but it does make the room bright. #5 Step outside just to soak in the sun and fresh air Just like natural light can make you feel great in your space, stepping outside and soaking in the sunlight and fresh air can make you feel great in your body! I love taking a nice deep breath in during my morning walk. The air is so crisp and clear – almost like an instant energy surge when it hits my lungs! Any chance you get during the day to step outside and breathe in the sun and air, take it! You don’t have to be outside long to reap the benefits that it brings. Going on a quick walk during your lunch break can be a great way to get energized to finish out your workday! #6 End your day with reflection I recently listened to “The Gap and The Gain” on Audible and one of the ways to “live in the gain” is to end your day with 3 accomplishments. No matter how big or small, listing out your accomplishments puts you in a state of pride and gratitude. It allows you to fall asleep on a positive note. I’m still working this into my nighttime routine, but it has been super helpful with waking up happier. When you think about the 3 things you accomplished for the day, you’re literally reflecting on your day! You’re running through the day in your mind to find your accomplishments. Reflecting on the day is a great way to close out the day and start fresh when you wake up the next day. It was always: what’s next? Nowadays, I still keep my eyes on the end vision, but I also take the time to reflect on how things have been going. This reflection allows me to make adjustments with myself, my actions and my surroundings to help me get to my end result. If you were like old me and skipped the reflection, I challenge you to do things differently! Reflection can bring so many good things to light about your progress and about yourself. Keep reading for 5 ways reflection sets you up to succeed…in all areas of life! 5 Ways Reflection Sets You Up to Succeed #1 You can assess what’s working and what’s not working Taking the time to reflect on things gives you a clearer perspective. What have you been doing that produces results? What have you been doing that drains you? What’s working? What’s not working? Not only isn’t it important to answer these questions as you work towards different goals, but it’s also incredibly important to know where you should or shouldn’t spend your time. Once you know what’s working, you can do more of those things. Once you know what’s not working, you can stop those things and do more of what is working! Your time is valuable and reflecting helps you determine how to spend it wisely. #2 You can decide if you need to adjust your goals or your actions Some people are big dreamers – and there’s nothing wrong with it. However, we don’t want to be dreaming our entire lives. We want to be living! Reflection can help you decide if your goals are truly things you want. It can also help you determine if your actions are in line with achieving those goals. Throwing all of the amazing wishes out there may take away from focusing on the handful of things you actually want to achieve. Take some time to reflect on your wishes and determine if they’re worth working towards. #3 You can determine if the goal is still in line with your values and desires Have you noticed that the things that were important to you 10 years ago are no longer important now? That’s because we grow over time. We outgrow things. We establish our core values and beliefs. We recognize what’s important and what isn’t. It’s a normal part of life. Reflection brings you up to speed with your current values and desires. The “life goal” you had right out of college may no longer be right for the woman you are today. Are you holding on to goals that are no longer in line with your values? Reflection will help you answer that question and start thinking about goals that matter to the person you are today. #4 You can learn new things about yourself One thing I’ve known about myself is that I have trust issues. I’ve learned to work through those issues with time and practice. There was a time a few years back where my boyfriend was on a boy’s trip for work and they went out late. He wasn’t responding for a few hours, which wasn’t normal, and as I felt the anxiety rise in me, I took a second to reflect. Were my trust issues creeping in? No, I didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. What was the problem then? I realized that I also have abandonment issues – being left behind, willingly or unwillingly. I never thought I had issues with that, until it dawned on me that my dad’s passing triggered a fear of losing others I love. Had I not taken the time to ask myself what was really wrong and reflect on the answer, I would have never known this issue was a thing. Reflection can provide so much insight into why we do and feel certain things. We can learn things about ourselves we never knew! #5 You can identify strengths and weaknesses for future goals Lastly, reflection sets you up to succeed by allowing you to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing this information can help you move forward accordingly when working towards your goals. You can stay in your lane with your strengths and you can delegate or seek help for your weaknesses. It’s important to know this information about yourself so that you can create a life in line with what you’re good at and what you’re not good at. If you’re not good at something that truly interests you, you can take classes or learn how to improve. If you’re not good at something you have no interest in, you can leave that thing behind. Whatever the reason holding you back from looking at your money is, you are stronger! Try to start each day by looking at your bank account. Check the balance and check your latest activity.   • 6 Questions to Help You Reflect on Your Goal Progress The last quarter of the year is always my favorite. Not just because of the holidays (though, they play a big role), but because of the opportunity to reflect and prepare for the new year. I’m a Virgo, so the thought of a fresh start always excites me, and what better fresh start than a new year?! I’ve been formally setting goals since I was 20 years old. I haven’t been fully reflecting on my goal progress since then, but I’ve definitely learned how to reflect on what has worked and what hasn’t. Reflection is such a critical part of the goal-setting process. When you take the time to flush out strengths and opportunities as it relates to your goals, it can help you set future goals that are attainable. To help, I’m sharing 6 questions to help you reflect on your goal progress. My hope is that after reading this article, you never forget your reflections again! 6 Questions to Help You Reflect on Your Goal Progress #1 Are you on track with your goal? Kicking off our list of questions to help you reflect on your goal progress is getting straight to the point. Are you on track? This may seem like an obvious question to ask, but your answer to the question could shed light on a few things. If you don’t know if you’re on track, then it means your goal isn’t as robust as it should be. When setting goals, you want to follow the S.M.A.R.T criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timeline). If your goal is missing any of those characteristics, especially Measurable and Time-specific, then it’s incomplete. You’ll know if you’re on track with a goal if you have a specific deadline and a specific target. For example: let’s say your goal is to save $5000 in 10 months. If you’re reflecting on your progress at the 5-month mark, you should have $2500 saved. You’re half-way to the goal deadline and so you should have half of the amount saved. Without those criteria though, you’ll never know if you’re really on track. #2 Have you set realistic milestones and timeframes for your goal? Question #2 ties directly into the question of if you’re on track with your goal. Does your goal have a timeframe and is it measurable? If so, and you’re not on track to reach your goal by the deadline, you’ll want to assess if you’ve set realistic milestones and timeframes for your goal. It can be so easy to be overzealous with setting goals, especially if you consider yourself a high-achieving individual. However, it doesn’t mean that you can accomplish any and everything. It also doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t leave a little room for something unexpected. Referring back to the earlier example of the goal to save $5000 in 10 months. That would require saving $500 every month for ten months. Assuming you have a budget plan in place, you’ve determined you can afford to save $250 every month after all of your bills and expenses are covered. $250 per month after 10 months is only $2500. With that being said, saving $500 per month isn’t a realistic milestone. That also means the likelihood of having $5000 saved after 10 months is not realistic. Now that you know, you can adjust your goal amount or timeframe. #3 Does your goal still excite you? Take it from me – there’s nothing more boring than working towards a goal that doesn’t excite you. Now, it’s possible that the outcome is more exciting than the goal itself. Obviously, paying a large amount of money towards debt every month is not exciting, but knowing that you’ll be debt free at the end of it is very exciting! Pulse check with your current goals and make sure that they excite you or the outcome of achieving the goal excites you. Bonus points if the goal does both. Currently, I’m aggressively saving money to pay my mortgage off. I’m putting large amounts of money into savings every few weeks, which is exciting. And, the thought of having my mortgage paid off next year also excites me! #4 How will your life improve when you reach the goal? Can’t seem to figure out if your goal is exciting. Asking yourself how your life will improve when you reach the goal can help. Regardless of what your goal is, think about how your life will improve when you reach the goal. If you can’t answer the question or there doesn’t seem to be any improvement after hitting the goal, then you’ll probably want to set new goals. If you have a goal to travel to a new country next year, then you may say that your life will improve because you’ll be more cultured and open-minded. If your goal is to start a business that makes a profit, even a small profit, then you may say that your life will improve because you’ll be able to save more to quit your job and take your business full-time. #5 Do you need to do anything differently to reach your goal? Once you’ve confirmed that your goal excites you and your life will improve when you reach the goal, you’ll want to think of ways to reach your goal faster – especially if you aren’t on track. What can you do that you haven’t tried? What options or resources are available to you to help you reach your goal? The point is to think about how you can get on track to reach your goal by the deadline or how you can reach your goal faster. If your life improves when the goal is reached, then why not try to reach the goal as quickly as reasonably possible?! #6 What accomplishments have you made as you work towards your goal? One of the most important aspects of reflection is recognizing how far you’ve come. If you haven’t read The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan, I highly recommend it. Sometimes, we can be so focused on getting where we want to be that we forget to stop and appreciate how far we’ve come. Anytime you’re assessing your goal progress, take the time to recognize what you have accomplished along the way. Even if you haven’t reached your goal, there are likely accomplishments along the way. For example, if your goal is to learn how to budget and all you’ve done so far to reach the goal is invest in a money coach, then recognize that! Making an investment in your growth is a huge accomplishment!   • 6 Tricks to Tame Your Anxiety from Debt Take it from the girl who has been in and out of debt multiple times – the anxiety is real! Debt is draining and the mental weight that comes with debt can be hard to manage. Sometimes, it’s easy to just throw in the towel and accept that your debt will always be there. Please don’t let that be you. Your debt CAN be tackled. It may not happen overnight, but it can happen. On the flip side, I also don’t want your debt to debilitate you. I don’t want you to constantly stress yourself into a tizzy thinking about your debt. To help you tame your anxiety from debt, I’m sharing 6 tricks to start implementing. If you have debt and it stresses you out, these 6 tricks will help you tame your debt-induced anxiety. 6 Tricks to Tame Your Anxiety from Debt #1 Detach your personal worth from your debt balance It’s incredibly hard not to base your personal worth on financial or material things. I blame the society we live in. We have a direct line of sight into how the wealthy spend their money, and it creates feelings of inadequacy when we can’t compete. I think this can happen whether a person has debt or not. Listen to the CGS podcast episode How I Combat the Competition Mindset for some of the ways I put the competitive thoughts on the back burner. If you have debt, no matter what got you into debt, I want you to detach your personal worth from your debt balance. More importantly, I want you to detach your personal worth from anything material or financial. You are so much more than what you owe or what you own. Detaching your personal value from your debt or material balances will reduce the amount of stress you have when you actually do look at your debt balances. #2 Create a realistic budget, that includes some of the things you love One of the best ways to tame your anxiety from debt is to have a budget plan in place that allows you to make sure your responsibilities are covered, you can enjoy life in moderation, and you can put extra money towards paying off your debt. Please don’t skip this step! A budget will be your saving grace as you work towards debt freedom. More importantly, your budget will be the key tool for success with managing your money whether you have debt or not. Not sure where to start? My specialty is budgeting, so I’d be happy to whip one up for you that allows you to enjoy life, put money towards your debt, and make sure your priorities are covered. Get started by visiting the Budget Form. #3 Get a plan in place to tackle your debt Once you have your budget created, you’ll know exactly how much extra you can put towards your debt. This information is critical as you move forward in your debt payoff journey. It also helps reduce your anxiety because you have an amount dedicated to your debt.  When it comes to paying down your debt, you’ll want to be strategic with it. Find a debt payoff strategy that works for you and stick with it. I recommend the snowball method, because it focuses on the lowest balance debt first, which allows you to get quick wins with your debt payoff progress. #4 Track your debt payoff progress Regardless of what debt payoff strategy you decide on, you’ll want to track your progress along the way. When I was paying down my debt, every month in my debt payoff spreadsheet, I would strikethrough the payment that was made towards my debt. Over time, it was incredibly motivating to see how much I had paid off. You don’t have to use a spreadsheet. You can physically write your payments made in a notebook. You can color in a calendar or Debt Payoff worksheet. You can also use an app to track your progress. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how you track your debt payoff progress, only that you do track it. Seeing the progress over time will keep you motivated to see the journey through! #5 Share your feelings in the CGS Facebook Group Debt can be draining. Debt can cause anxiety. Debt can eat you up inside. Debt can do all of those things, if you let it! Don’t keep your feelings towards your debt bottled up. Find a safe space to get those feelings off your chest. The City Girl Savings Facebook Group is a judgment free community that allows you to share. You can also find other avenues of sharing. Talk with family or friends. Consider Debtors Anonymous. Work with a money coach. See a therapist. There are options available to you to help you share your feelings regarding debt and help you tame your anxiety. #6 Practice patience and commit for the long haul Paying off your debt is not going to happen overnight, especially if you have a lot of it. Help tame your anxiety by setting realistic expectations about the debt payoff process. It’s okay if you’re on this journey for the next few years. Decide to commit to the process and see it through until the end. Once you’ve put the stake in the ground and made that decision, you can breathe a sigh of relief. You’re committing to doing what it takes, no matter how long it takes. That alone can put your anxiety at bay.
