Can you remember a time before dry shampoo existed? A time where your salon blowout would only last 2-3 days before resorting to the infamous bun, braid or ponytail?
Thank goodness dry shampoo came along and gave us the ability to preserve freshly styled hair! Dry shampoo typically comes in a spray or powdered form and acts as a waterless cleanser.
It extends the length of your styling by absorbing dirt and oil and adding volume while leaving a fresh scent. Dry shampoo is ideal after the gym, in between washes, and before a night out.
While the benefits of dry shampoo are great, how do you find the best dry shampoo to fit your needs? Well to start, you will need to determine what you are looking for in a product.
Do you want a dry shampoo that makes your hair smell great? Do you want a dry shampoo that will extend your blowout by adding volume to your hair? How about a dry shampoo that works well with your wavy, curly or coarse hair?
The CGS Team has put together a list of the best dry shampoos to meet your needs. Below you will find our CGS Picks of dry shampoos for fine hair, wavy and curly hair, ethnic or coarse hair, as well as the best scented and cleansing dry shampoos.
Best Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair: Salon Grafix Play it Big Volumizing Dry Shampoo
If maintaining volume in between washes is your goal, which is usually the case when fine hair is involved, then a dry shampoo that specializes in adding body while cleansing is the way to go.
We recommend Salon Grafix Play it Big Volumizing Dry Shampoo because of its ability to absorb dirt and oil while instantly creating volume. The dry shampoo also includes keratin protein complex to strengthen strands while adding fullness.
This dry shampoo can be found for under $10. It also comes in a clear, blond or brunette formula.
Best Dry Shampoo for Textured Hair: Glo Essentials Re-Energize Dry Shampoo
When looking to cleanse wavy or curly hair in between washes, a dry shampoo with helps restore shine and softness is a must. Since textured hair can be oily at the root but dry at the ends, a dry shampoo that cleanses and conditions will help maintain fresh hair in between washes.
Glo Essentials Re-Energize Dry Shampoo’s formula contains rice starch to help absorb oil at the roots, but also has Hydrolyzed Silk Protein to smooth and condition your hair. The result is a clean scalp with silky, shiny, and moisturized hair.
Best Dry Shampoo for Ethnic Hair: Evo Water Killer Dry Shampoo
Similar to that of wavy and curly hair, if you have coarse or ethnic hair then the best dry shampoo will be one that soothes an itchy or oily scalp while conditioning hair.
In addition to cleansing and conditioning, the added bonus of body is a plus after a sweaty gym session, a hot summer day, or since your last shampoo and style. We love that Evo Water Killer Dry Shampoo is perfect for any hair texture, including coarse hair.
The product is versatile and leaves hair clean and full while adding bounce and a fresh scent. This UK originating product can be found on Amazon or through Evo’s website.
Best Scented Dry Shampoo: Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo
If your ultimate goal is to always leave the house with amazing smelling hair, then a dry shampoo that cleanses and leaves a delicious scent is what you need. Whether you are headed to work, leaving the gym or going on a hot date, you want your locks to appear and smell like they have just left the salon.
Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo is the CGS Pick for best smelling dry shampoo. With scents complimenting those found in the Caribbean, this product leaves your hair fresh and clean while smelling like you just returned from an exotic location.
The Batiste Dry Shampoo products can be found at Ulta, Walgreens and more.
Best Cleansing Dry Shampoo: Alterna Bamboo Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo
When you are trying to preserve clean, freshly styled hair as long as possible, then a dry shampoo designed to clean and extend your blowout is a necessity. We love that Alterna’s Bamboo Style Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo absorbs dirt, oil, and product build up while adding volume and shine.
The product is sulfate and paraben free and contains organic ingredients of bamboo extract and blue yucca root. As an added bonus, Alterna’s Bamboo Style Dry Shampoo contains a color retaining formula that preserves dyed hair color. This dry shampoo can be found at Nordstrom, Sephora and more.

I have never tried dry shampoo but I lookfoward to trying it. Since I spend a lot of time in the gym it would be nice to have a dry shampoo that will come in handy and give life to my hair after a workout
I have tried some but they haven’t really worked for me. Let me know if you come across one that you really like!
