• 6 Budget-Friendly Updates to Cozy Up Your Home When it comes to making your home a cozy oasis, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Simple DIY touches can make any home a comfortable spot. Mixing old and new styles can add an individual bit of flair. While we all have our own idea of what coziness looks and feels likes, any cozy space will evoke feelings of comfort, relaxation, and contentment. Check out these six budget-friendly options for making your home feel that much cozier. #1 Declutter If you’ve been waiting for a sign to declutter and get rid of items that no longer serve you, this is it! Organized, clutter-free locations instantly become more relaxing, and the less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to keep clean. Clutter can cause physical and mental obstructions and distractions. Clean it up, and you’ll instantly feel cozier and be able to appreciate what you already have. As a result, your home will feel more comfortable and you’ll avoid spending money on things you don’t need. Not sure where to start with decluttering? Check out Declutter Your Way to Happiness. #2 Incorporate Simple Things When creating a cozy space, you can never go wrong with simple touches like throw blankets, accents, and plans. Faux fur throws are the best for creating a cozy setup—they can take you from lazy weekend nap to full-on hibernation in the blink of an eye. Stop by your favorite Target or thrift store and pick up a simple wooden accent piece. Wood adds warmth to a room without taking up a lot of space. Don’t skip the bedroom when it comes to displaying your much-loved houseplants! While they add a nice bit of coziness to any room, houseplants also purify the air for a healthier night’s sleep. #3 Add Vintage Pieces For a soft, inviting space, a delicate mix of vintage textiles can add subtle depth and interest. Whether you choose textured wallpaper or a herringbone-patterned floor, the space will feel like the ideal spot to curl up with a good book. Warm wooden accents and a vase filled with fresh flowers can create a nature lover’s paradise, and with a stack of books placed on a shelf nearby, you’ll never want to leave your tranquil refuge! #4 Choose the Right Colors Neutral hues can instantly make your home feel cozier. Simple colors like a light gray accented with soft baby blue or lavender hues will promote relaxation and comfort. Light colors are great for making a room feel larger, which is ideal for a space like the kitchen or living room. A darker hue in your bedroom will create the perfect spot to relax and recharge. Adding some plush bedding and tons of pillows will create nice contrast and make the bed the focal point of the room. Rugs are another great way to add a pop of color, texture, and warmth to any room. Try layering rugs in different shapes and patterns for an extra cozy look! #5 Add Light Light is everything when it comes to creating a cozy space without breaking the bank. Soft lighting choices like lamps and overhead lighting with dimmers, along with a scented candle or two, can up the cozy factor of any room. A fireplace adds warmth, but if you don’t have the real thing, even a thrift store mantel piece with some interesting details can create a similar effect. When it’s time to decorate for the holidays, nothing says cozy like a mantel covered in evergreen. #6 Rearrange Furniture Nothing is less expensive than rearranging the furniture you already own! Finding a new configurating for your furniture can make any space feel fresh, funky, and cozy. If you have a large piece of furniture in front of a window, moving it away and letting in more natural light will work wonders. Creating a quiet nook in a corner with an armchair, a side table, and a strategically placed lamp adds a bit of cozy and whimsy to any room. Place two comfortable chairs near a window and facing each other to create an intimate space. Never underestimate the importance of furniture placement! • I Did a 7-Day Juice Cleanse and Here’s What Happened I’ve been working out consistently for a few years now, but what I can never seem to get a full handle on is my diet! Here’s the thing…when I do diet, I see the results. I tend to go with extreme diets (I did keto twice) and then revert back to my old eating habits. While I’m very happy with my working out regime, I truly believe mastering my diet will have the best results for me and my body. So, with that, I’ve decided to try a 7-day juice cleanse. The timing of this cleanse coincides with an upcoming trip to Hawaii, but my ultimate goal is to reset my body, my palette, and my mindset! Obviously, I want to lose some extra weight on the cleanse, but that’s not my ultimate goal. My ultimate goal is to take back control of my food consumption. I let food control me! It’s so crazy, but I do. I get excited to eat. I eat when I’m bored. I eat to enjoy the taste. And, if I’m hungry…forget about diet! When my hunger cravings kick in, I just want to eat tasty foods…like carbs. I love pasta! So, I want to be very intentional with this cleanse and let this kick start my healthy-eating lifestyle change. I decided to document in for anyone also looking to do a similar cleanse. In fact, a lot of people requested I share how it goes on Instagram! I also wanted to record the changes over the 7 days, for my reference and for my continued growth long after the cleanse. A Few Days Before Prior to committing to the juice cleanse, I decided to go on a mostly-salad diet. I would have a protein shake and coffee for breakfast, and salads for lunch and dinner. I’d have a few small snacks thrown in the mix. I’d say this was 80% of my routine for a few weeks before the cleanse. The other 20% still consisted of the diet, but with cheat meals thrown in. Since I was starting the juice cleanse on a Sunday, I decided not to go cold turkey. The Friday before, I started to reduce the amount of food I typically eat, and increase the amount of water I drink. I’m good about drinking 60-80 ounces of water a day. With the juice cleanse, the recommendation is to drink at least a gallon of water every day (128 ounces). So, I started that on Friday. I also made it a point to skip my typical weekend coffees. The only things I planned to consume on the cleanse were the juices and water, so may as well be as ready as possible! On Saturday evening, my 7-day juice cleanse (from Squeezed) showed up! Day 1 Recap Day 1 was easier than I thought. Granted, I went in with pretty low expectations. It also helped that the juices tasted pretty good! I created a schedule for my 6 juices to follow each day: Juice 1 – 7:30amJuice 2 – 10:00amJuice 3 – 12:00pmJuice 4 – 2:30pmJuice 5 – 5:00pmJuice 6 – 7:30pm In between my juices, I made it a point to drink about a gallon of water throughout the day. I also went to the gym and did a low-resistance workout. Throughout the day I went to the bathroom more than usual, but that was to be expected. Because I know my weaknesses with food, I decided to think of each juice as a “meal”. That way, I could still get excited about my meal, but I’m really just having my required juice. I think this made a big difference as well. I didn’t have strong hunger urges throughout the day. I also didn’t experience any headaches or discomfort, unlike my boyfriend, who’s doing the cleanse with me. All-in-all, day 1 was a success! Day 2 Recap My second day of the juice cleanse was on a Monday, and I make it a point to workout every morning Monday through Friday. That didn’t stop during cleanse week. What was different was that I didn’t take any pre-workout, and I noticed a difference. I definitely wasn’t as pumped and energized as I normally am. I made it through my workout, but it felt more difficult than usual – I attribute that to no food consumed in over 24 hours. I stuck to my schedule of when to drink the juices and I didn’t have any bad cravings. I had a few instances where I felt hungry, but made it a point to chug some water! I’m not feeling bad, having headaches or feeling weak. I’d say day 2 was another success. Day 3 Recap Day 3 of the cleanse was another success! I worked out in the morning, but definitely felt lower energy than my normal workouts, both with food and pre-workout. I stuck to my guns and followed the schedule for drinking the juices. I had some hunger cravings at night, but made it a point to drink a lot of water, and that made the difference. I had a mentally draining day, and that caused me to want to eat. However, I’m showing myself that I’m fully capable of controlling what I eat, my thoughts around eating and when I eat. Fun fact – the scale shows I’m down 3lbs! Day 4 Recap Something interesting came up on day 4 – my bathroom trip was very colorful! I know that may seem like TMI (too much information), but when I had done research on a juice cleanse, no one mentioned that! After digging deeper, certain fruits and vegetables can cause discoloration of your urine. That’s exactly what happened! Outside of that, day 4 was as smooth as the other days. I wavered on my drinking schedule, just because of so much happening during the day, but all juices were consumed! Day 5 Recap To me, day 5 has been the hardest. Not from a hunger perspective, but a boredom perspective. I’m bored with the juices! I’m ready to incorporate healthy foods back into my diet! I will say that this cleanse has made me realize that I’m not as hungry as I think I am (when I’m not doing a cleanse) and that I don’t have to indulge my “hunger” with bad foods, just because I’m “starving”. That may be the best thing that can and will come out of this cleanse! I’m still pushing through my workouts – it’s rough without food to fuel me and pre-workout to get me going in the mornings. I’m tired, but I’m not. It’s hard to put my finger on it! It’s like I have more mental clarity and my tiredness isn’t from a lack of food, but the mental strength of going through a 7-day cleanse. 2 more days to go!!! Day 6 Recap Day 6 was definitely easiest from a hunger/cravings perspective. At this point, I didn’t have any desires to eat anything bad…or, anything at all. My boyfriend is doing the cleanse with me and he’s having a much harder time controlling himself than I am. He wanted to eat tonight! I told him that he can, but I’m holding out! Day 7 Recap My final day! I had my first 2 juices of the day, then my boyfriend and I ended up getting a healthy dinner. I used it as an opportunity to control what I eat and how much I eat, and I did good! A part of me would have liked to get through the full day, but I’m very proud of how much control I had over the past 6 days. I was truly expecting the worse. Now, I want to move forward with smaller food portions, healthier foods overall, and drinking a gallon of water a day. Overall, I would say this juice cleanse was a huge success! Here are some of my most memorable wins: I lost 6lbs I took control of my cravings and hunger I stayed strong and followed the regime I’m no longer craving food that doesn’t serve my body Here are a few surprises: I broke out My urine was colorful I technically only lasted 6 ½ days, but will use the remaining juices as meal replacements I would definitely recommend the cleanse to someone looking to take control of the way they think about food, and what they do with food. It’s a wonderful reset! If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below and I’ll do my best … I Did a 7-Day Juice Cleanse and Here’s What HappenedRead More »

  • 5 Bedtime Habits for a Successful New Day There’s no need to get ready when you’re already ready! In fact, there are things you can do today to make tomorrow healthy, positive, and productive. Imagine having bedtime habits that set you up for a new day of success?! Most people are looking for ways to improve themselves, but aren’t sure whether they’re doing things the right way. The truth is that a lot of us think we’re being productive, but spend hours every day on time-wasting activities, bad habits, procrastination, and having to make decisions we could have automated.  Do yourself a favor and check out these five bedtime habits that will prepare you for a successful new day.  #1 Unplug When the workday is over, that means it’s time to unplug yourself and toss the devices onto their charging ports. Unplugging lets you stop worrying about others and start focusing on yourself.  However, many of us struggle with putting our devices down. A lot of times, we wrestle with FOMO, the fear of missing out. The reality is, it’s just our thoughts getting the best of us.  Unplugging from your phone—and especially social media—can help you find and act on opportunities related to your general well-being. Spend time before bed off your devices, and you’ll find you sleep better and wake up refreshed! #2 Meditate  Being “on” 24/7 isn’t healthy for your body, mind, or spirit, which is one reason meditation is so important. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind.  Read 7 Reasons to Start Meditating for more benefits. Practicing meditation helps you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. Meditation is as simple as sitting down and focusing on the feeling of your breathing, as well as repeating positive affirmations.  Those unfamiliar with the benefits of meditation might worry that it will harm their productivity, or insist they “don’t have time” to sit and breathe for 20 minutes. This is one reason that meditation is a great bedtime routine—it helps you relax and unwind, and results in enhanced physical and emotional well-being for tomorrow! # 3 Evaluate It is so important to acknowledge and reward our daily achievements, because what gets rewarded gets repeated. Take some time to evaluate your successes as part of your bedtime routine. Identify the most successful thing you completed today, and give yourself a pat on the back! Once you’ve evaluated the day’s successes, take note of what you need to do tomorrow to keep your momentum going. This will keep you focused and ready for the new day!    #4 Let Go The goal is to be a rock star every day, but we aren’t robots—errors will happen! The key to having a successful tomorrow is to let go of the negative. You can’t change anything about what happened today: it might not have been your best, but it probably wasn’t your worst, either.  Remember that any mistakes from the day are not a reflection of who you are as a person. Focusing on the negative will only make you sleep deprived and stressed. Instead of overthinking when you should be trying to get to sleep, practice letting go and forgiving yourself instead! #5 Write a List Creating your to do list before going to bed ensures you don’t forget anything overnight. We often think we don’t need reminders because of course we’ll remember to get to that task in the morning—only to wake up with no memory of what we were thinking about! Writing a list the night before also saves you time in the morning to start tackling the day’s tasks. Take some time to write your list in order of importance or how much time each task will take to complete.  This might sound overly meticulous, but we promise that it will bring you success during your workday. While your morning routine sets the tone for your day, your nighttime routine sets the stage for your morning. Related: 7 Bad Habits Ruining Your Sleep Any habit is something you do regularly without having to think much about it, like brushing your teeth, and about half the actions we take daily are habits. However, your subconscious can’t tell the difference between good and bad habits—you have to do that consciously!  Once you develop good habits, success is no longer based on what you do, it’s based on who you are. Good routines lead to good work, which leads to good outcomes.  Have you tried incorporating any of these suggestions into a bedtime routine? If so, which one have you found to be most helpful? • 7 Ways to Save More Money Without Even Trying I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely in the business of making my life easier wherever and however I can. This is especially true when it comes to money—and saving it! Wouldn’t it be nice to save more money without even trying?!If I can find ways to save money without even trying, you had better believe I’m going to take full advantage of it. Since I’ve been focused on money for some time, I’ve stumbled on a handful of effortless ways to save.Lucky for you, I want to share those strategies with you! Whether these strategies are familiar or introduce you to a new money-saving hack or two, I hope this article sheds some light onto additional ways you can stack your chips! Keep reading for 7 ways to save more money without even trying!7 Ways to Save More Money Without Even Trying#1 Use DigitOkay, if you’ve been following me for any amount of time, then you already know that I love Digit! In fact, love might even be an understatement! Digit has truly been a game-changer for me when it comes to saving extra money without even trying. Here’s how it works: Digit is an app that links to your bank account. It uses an algorithm to monitor your spending habits, and will then transfer out small amounts of money—so small you won’t even miss it!That money is then added to your Digit savings goals, and you can set up as many of those as you’d like, I currently have 3 goals set up: one is a Rainy Day fund (pretty standard!), one for “Just Because,” and one for a faster car payoff. You can also add cute emojis to your goals to make it even more fun! Digit allows you to set a limit on how much it transfers out of your checking account, so you’ll always feel comfortable knowing they won’t take too much.If you’ve never tried Digit before, get a free $5 on me for signing up! Also, check out the article How to Use Digit to Reach Your Money Goals for more tips!#2 Leverage your bank’s savings featuresDid you know that most banks and credit unions have features that can help you save more money? Wells Fargo has the “Way to Save” feature that transfers $1 into savings every time you swipe your debit card.Bank of America has a “Keep the Change” option that rounds up every purchase to the next dollar and transfers the difference into savings. Chase has an “AutoSave” feature, and many credit unions offer cash back for debit card purchases. My point is that you can take advantage of any savings opportunities available to you right in the bank you already use! You won’t have to worry about coming up with a savings plan on your own, and you get the added benefit of knowing you’re always saving a little extra without even trying.#3 Familiarize yourself with any perks that come with your credit cardsI really wish I had leveraged credit card perks earlier. For example, I found out that my American Express card offered complimentary car insurance on any car rentals—I’d been paying for the extra insurance through the rental car companies for nothing! Had I done my research, I would have been able to save that money.Shoulda, woulda, coulda. But now you can learn from my mistake! If you have credit cards, be sure to familiarize yourself with all the free perks that come with them. You might have to purchase through the card to get certain perks, but if you were going to buy something anyway, it’s worth it for the savings (as long as you pay your card off in full!).Check out 10 Credit Card Perks to Take Advantage Of for some common perks.#4 Take advantage of employee benefitsHere’s another one that might blow your mind: you can save money by taking advantage of benefits through your employer! Nowadays, most companies offer things like tuition and childcare reimbursement, student loan payment matching, free therapy sessions, and more! All you have to do? Show up to work every day like normal! The first step is to make sure you know all of the benefits that are available to you as an employee—your HR person can fill you in, or there might be information in an employee handbook or online portal. Once you’ve found out what benefits you have, start taking advantage of them so you can save that money!#5 Contribute the full match amount for your 401(k)A common employee benefit, and one worth highlighting on its own, is a 401(k) contribution match. Many employers will match any 401(k) contributions you make, up to a certain percentage or dollar amount. If you’re not taking advantage of the matching offered by your company, you are losing out on free money! Not cool! This is truly one of the easiest ways to save more money with no effort.Saving for retirement is critical in and of itself, and taking advantage of the match contribution is a great way to save even more. 401(k) contribution and matching details are often provided when you first start a job, and you can always reach out to your HR rep if you’re not sure how to get started or make a change. #6 Set up automatic savings transfersI know this one seems obvious, but read on before you roll your eyes! Setting up automatic savings transfers requires a tiny one-time effort that permanently takes the work off of you while still saving you money. Before you schedule an automatic savings transfer, take a look at your budget and see what you can afford to save. Automatic transfers are great, but if you can’t keep that money in your savings account, they don’t work as well. The only way to keep money in savings is to make sure you’re only putting aside money you don’t actually need to spend. We don’t want to get overzealous with savings and then not have enough for bills! However, once you know what you can afford to set aside and schedule the transfer, you will effortlessly save money from then on.#7 Use credit card rewards for everyday purchasesRounding out this list of ways to save money without even trying is tip number 7: use credit card cash rewards for everyday purchases! Do you have a credit card that gives you cash back? Then use that cash back option for things you’d already planned on buying! Then, the money you would have spent on those things can go straight into savings. Like where my head is at?! Related: 5 Steps to Take if You Can’t Seem to SaveThere you have it! A handful of ways I’ve found helpful when trying to save more money with little effort. I hope you give one (or more) of the ways above a try!Do you have any specific ways you save extra money? I’d love to hear them!  Drop a comment below to share what wo … 7 Ways to Save More Money Without Even TryingRead More »

  • 6 Easy Ways to Get Started with Saving Money Saving money seems like the one thing that should be easy to do in the middle of a pandemic, right? We’re going out less, eating in more, and if we’ve been lucky enough to keep our jobs, then it seems like reaching our savings goals should be a lot easier. The fact of the matter is that saving is not always that simple: it takes patience, discipline, and, most importantly, a plan. Check out these six easy ways to get started on saving, no matter the circumstances. #1 Ask About DiscountsThere’s a saying: closed mouths don’t get fed. There are so many discounts out there just waiting for you to ask about them! If you ask and get told there’s nothing available, remember that you always have the power to negotiate. Everyone has been affected by the pandemic—trust and believe that there is room to negotiate a better price or a lower payment. Even when the world starts to open back up, keep your eye out for discounts and never be afraid to ask. Check out some tips for asking for discounts. #2 Cut Down on Grocery Expenses Grocery shopping is simply a must, whether you’re only responsible for feeding yourself or for a large family. The key to cutting down on grocery expenses is not to be greedy, and to keep yourself from getting caught making impulse purchases. Focus on buying only what you need and not indulging as much in those wants. Use coupons, loyalty programs, and in-store deals to bring the price down even further. Finally, make sure you actually use all the food you buy—if you’re wasting food, you’re wasting money. Cutting back on your grocery bill will free up extra cash that you can then direct right to your savings account. #3 Say Farewell to Cable There’s no better time to cut the cord than right now! All our favorite content and shows are available on streaming platforms, and getting rid of cable can save you a bundle every single year. The average monthly price for cable is $107/month, which adds up to over $1,200 every year! If you only sign up for the streaming services you’ll actually use, you will still have access to all the best content while saving a ton of money. Additionally, there’s always the “sharing is caring” method. Get together with some friends or family and decide who will sign up for what streaming service, then share the password and set each person up with a screen. That way everyone can watch content without breaking the bank. #4 Use Saving AppsEverything seems to move quickly these days, and that includes the money coming into and leaving our bank accounts! It can be intimidating to get started on saving when just keeping track of your current expenses is overwhelming. To help you get started on your saving journey, we encourage you to sign up for a savings app, like Digit. Digit is a mobile phone app that takes the work out of saving money. The app will analyze your income and spending patterns, then dip into your checking account and move a few dollars into a savings account (the usual range is $2-17, every 2-3 days). The cool thing about Digit is that you can set it to save as little or as much as you want and direct that money right towards your savings goals! Digit truly helps you save without adding another chore to your to-do list. #5 Limit Dining Out Eating out all the time can hit your pockets hard—and that includes takeout. Start preparing your food at home and watch the savings pile up, month after month. You’ll find that eating at home is often much cheaper and much higher quality! Since many places still aren’t fully open for dining it, take advantage of this opportunity to learn how to make homemade meals. Cooking for yourself keeps you safely socially distanced, and allows you to enjoy a nice meal! You can buy a solid week’s worth of groceries for the same price as just a few meals at a restaurant. Limiting your dining out is an easy way to develop some new skills and keep money in your accounts. #6 Pay in Cash It’s possible to break the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck and actually build savings, and paying in cash is one method that can help. Some people say they steer clear of using cash because they don’t want to overspend, but limiting yourself to cash can be a game-changer. When using a debit or credit card for purchases, it becomes easy to lose track of how much we’re spending. Without realizing it, we can dip into our savings, overdraft, or charge more on a card than we have available to pay it off at the end of the month. Paying in cash means you always know exactly how much you have left to spend. You can even separate your cash into different categories so you have an even clearer idea of how much you’re spending and how much is left.  It doesn’t matter where you are in life, how old you are, or what job you have. You can start to save—don’t let your current circumstances stop you from trying! Have you tried any of these methods when cutting back expenses and saving? If so, which methods did you find most helpful? Don’t forget to join the conversation via our City Girl Savings Facebook group! We love … 6 Easy Ways to Get Started with Saving MoneyRead More »

  • 5 Task Management Tools I Can't Live Without Productivity is a force to be reckoned with—but so is procrastination. Fortunately, I’m not a procrastinator. I just can’t do it, because I wind up constantly thinking about what I need to get done. It’s easier for me to just get my task done, and then I can do whatever I want. With that said, there is a lot that I need to get done on an ongoing basis and if there’s anything that will make it easier, like task management tools, I’m all for it! Being a business owner, working full-time, and running a household automatically comes with an extra-long to-do list. That means I need tools and systems that help me manage my tasks and my time. I’m sharing 5 tasks management tools I couldn’t see myself living without. I don’t know what I did before these tools! I hope they can help you improve your productivity too! 5 Task Management Tools I Can’t Live Without #1 Asana This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned Asana and it certainly won’t be the last time! Asana is a task and project management platform that helps individuals and businesses stay on track. I first started using Asana just for myself, to manage the tasks I needed to get done in my business. I eventually took a training program on how to set Asana up for success and my productivity skyrocketed! So much so that I eventually got my team’s tasks set up in Asana as well. It’s such a helpful tool for staying on track and managing everything that needs to get done, whether it’s a recurring or one-off task! #2 Notion I recently got introduced to Notion and I fell in love with it instantly. Notion acts as a hub for your business or personal life. You can create databases, store meeting notes, build tables with formula tracking, share with teammates, and more. I can tell that I’m only scratching the surface with it, so I do plan on taking a training to ensure I’m getting the most out of it. Notion does offer a free version, which is great to take advantage of until you get your feet wet. There are also numerous ways to earn credits to be applied as discounts on your bill! Not only is having all of your information in one place helpful from an organization perspective, but it’s nice to know that you can access your information from anywhere. Thanks to the cloud capability, your information is always available, regardless of where you’re checking in from. #3 Dropbox (or Google Drive)I’m currently using both Dropbox and Google Drive for storing and sharing data. I believe any individual or business needs a single repository for all of their information (private or not). Having one centralized place you can go to and find everything you need is such a time saver! Not only is having all of your information in one place helpful from an organization perspective, but it’s nice to know that you can access your information from anywhere. Thanks to the cloud capability, your information is always available, regardless of where you’re checking in from. #4 Slack Another tool I started using this year is Slack. I currently use it for cross-communication with my team and also communication from multiple systems I have. For example, when a client purchases a CGS budget plan, my Slack sends me a cute, emoji-filled notification instantly. It’s a great way for me and my team to get a boost during our day! I have plenty of Slack notifications set up, so I can always be aware of what’s going on in my business. Slack can also be used to communicate with others, whether clients, teammates, or business partners. Having one central location for communication makes life a lot easier. #5 Acuity Scheduling The final tool I can’t live without is Acuity Scheduling. I use it to manage all of my sales calls, client meetings, and team pull-ups. It’s a great system for making sure calls aren’t being double booked. It’s also nice to set up one schedule and have multiple call types follow that schedule. Previously, I sometimes forgot to add calls to my calendar and would wind up double-booked. It caused me so much anxiety! With Acuity, I know I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I also get notifications when calls are added to my calendar. Using Acuity allows me to focus on other things and show up when I need to! • 7 Ways to Make Money While Traveling the Globe Think you need to be chained to a desk to make money? Think again! There are plenty of people who work and make money while they’re traveling the world. Talk about the life! I’m certainly not there yet, but I’m working my tail off to get City Girl Savings ready to be run from anywhere. However, an online-based business isn’t the only way to make money while traveling the globe. If travel is high on your priority list, then you need money to make it happen. I’m sharing 7 ways to make money while traveling the globe. You can travel and keep the funds coming in! Make sure you have your plan in place first, then…seize the day! 7 Ways to Make Money While Traveling the Globe #1 Blogging The beauty of blogging is that you can do it from anywhere. You can get even more specific and start a travel blog—you’re already traveling the globe! Another benefit of blogging is that you can have multiple streams of income directly from your blog, from advertising to creating sponsored content for companies. If you want to go the blogging route, start now! Blogging success doesn’t come overnight, but doing the right things from the beginning can make it a lot easier to grow your blog traffic and make money from your blog. I break down everything you need to know to get started with blogging in the article How to Start a Money-Making Blog. #2 Partner with a travel-specific company The age of digital influence is upon us. Brands are collaborating (and paying) influencers to talk about them, share their favorites, and more. If you want to make money while traveling the globe, start pitching yourself and your story to brands. I’d suggest getting specific and reaching out to travel-related companies. Think about airlines, hotels, restaurants, etc. You can let these brands know you’re headed to their location and would love to share what they have to offer. The more followers you have, the more money you can request. #3 Seek freelance work wherever you go Becoming a virtual freelancer will allow you to work from where you’re traveling to. If you like graphic design, copywriting, website creation, or any other service, consider becoming a freelancer! You can offer your services for sale on a case-by-case basis with Fiverr or Upwork. You decide which projects to take and you call the shots on how many you do and what you charge. You can also seek out freelance work in whatever city or country you’re traveling too. This may take more work, as you’ll want to do research before and during your stay, to make sure you can dive right into working. #4 Take and sell photosStock photography websites like Shutterstock, iStock Photo, Getty Images, and Twenty20 sell stock photos to the general public. How does this work for you? These companies don’t take all of the stock photos themselves! They purchase the rights to the photos from photographers. Once the photos sell, the photographer receives an instant royalty. Since you’ll be traveling, I have no doubt you’ll be able to take some good pictures! If you’re skilled with your phone or camera, submit them to stock photography websites. If your images are approved, the second they are downloaded from the stock photography site, you receive a payment. #5 Become a virtual coach The coaching industry has surged in the past few years. You can hire a coach to help you do just about anything nowadays. This can be great for you, because you can coach your clients virtually. Maybe you offer coaching services on planning and booking lavish vacations! That’s just one idea that could emerge from your globe-trotting lifestyle, but the good thing about coaching is the options are endless. My point is that if you are skilled in a particular area, and you wouldn’t mind making money from your skills, going into the coaching industry can be a great virtual career. If you have knowledge or experience in a certain area and can get results for yourself or others, you can become a coach. #6 Sell a digital product A digital product is an item that is created for consumption digitally. Things like online courses, online videos, virtual workshops, and eBooks are all examples of digital products. If you are passionate or knowledgeable about a certain topic and don’t want to become a coach, package it up into an eBook, online course, or online worksheet, and sell it. People are willing to pay for things they don’t know how to do—especially if they know it works for you. #7 Invest in the market Proceed with caution with this one! There are two different ways to make money in the stock market: day trading and long-term investing. If you need the money quickly, then day trading could be an option. It takes skill, understanding, and a lot of luck to succeed at day-trading. You’ll want to do extensive research before you begin. When long-term investing is more appropriate, you can take a lump sum of money, invest it something like a low-fee index fund, and let it grow over time. You may not make the money right away, but eventually the gains should be there. Please note that with either option, there is the possibility that you can lose money. Long-term investing is usually a better strategy for seeing gains, but nothing is guaranteed. If you would be in a bad position losing money, this may not be the option for you. • 6 Essential Oils to Add to Your Skincare Routine Essential oils can help your body relax, aid with sleep, reduce headaches, and enhance the effectiveness of massage therapy. In addition to those benefits, essential oils can lift your mood—just a whiff of the fragrance can be enough! Another awesome aspect of essential oils is that you can create your own combination using your favorite scents, or look for a premade blend, often found at a local natural goods store. For more information on incorporating essential oils into a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine, check out these six specific options! #1 Pure Argan Oil Essential oils have no lipids in them, which means putting the oils directly onto your skin can actually dry it out. However, argan oil is a natural byproduct that’s filled with omega fatty acids. It works wonders for sensitive and irritated skin! The omega fatty acids reduce redness and prevent discomfort. Argan oil is great for all skin types: oily, combination, and dry. This particular oil falls in the middle of the spectrum—not too heavy, not too light—making it the perfect addition to your skincare routine. It’s also packed with vitamin E and linoleic acids, all of which work to lightly moisturize, soften dry patches, and even reduce acne. #2 Helichrysum Oil  Helichrysum oil contains arzanol, an anti-inflammatory that can heal wounds. This type of oil also has antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant features that help with cell regeneration and prevent scarring. Not only is it important to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil or lotion, it’s also important to be mindful of the ratios. To use helichrysum oil in your skincare regimen, add 5 to 10 drops to the carrier oil or lotion you’ll use on your face. When applying it elsewhere, the recommended mixture is 3 to 5 drops added to a carrier oil or lotion. Apply the oil mixture daily to target fine lines and wrinkles. Helichrysum oil is a great choice for promoting healthy skin cell regeneration, giving you a glowing, youthful complexion. #3 Lavender Essential Oil As with helichrysum oil, it’s important to dilute lavender with a carrier oil or moisturizer. Lavender essential oil is distilled from the plant Lavandula angustifolia and its soothing scent promotes relaxation. Lavender oil is believed to treat anxiety, fungal infections, allergies, depression, insomnia, eczema, nausea, and even menstrual cramps! Using lavender oil is also associated with improved hair health and digestion. If you ever find yourself encountering a beauty burn, no need to worry—lavender oil can help there too. Lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties, so a few drops applied topically to a burn or sunburn will have a wonderfully soothing effect. Lavender oil is a blessing to any skincare routine: it can also lessen acne and reduce wrinkles! #4 Tea Tree Essential OilTea tree oil is great for treating acne because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. This oil can help calm redness, swelling, and inflammation, and may even help prevent or reduce acne scars. Experts consider tea tree oil to be safe as a topical treatment, and it can be applied directly to the skin on a daily basis. Be sure that you are using the pure (100% oil) for for this type of application. If you have sensitive skin, consult with a dermatologist before applying. Adding tea tree oil to your daily skincare regimen can pave the way for healthy, glowing skin. It can also alleviate issues like insect bites! Keep this oil in mind as outdoor activities get underway. #5 Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Ylang ylang helps moisturize and enhance the appearance of healthy skin, and can be used in hair mask mixtures as well. Ylang ylang is also used as part of a combination spray that targets head lice. This type of essential oil promotes relaxation, kills bacteria, lowers blood pressure, and is even associated with increased sexual desire! Ylang ylang has hydrating properties that aid in maintaining the skin’s oil production, keeping it soft, smooth, and well-nourished. Its natural antiseptic properties help heal cuts and cracks caused by excessively dry skin, as well. #6 Lemongrass Essential Oil Lemongrass is a fresh and fruity lemon-scented essential oil that can be put to good use for any number of beauty purposes. Lemongrass oil treats signs of skin aging, serving as a natural antioxidant. It’s a natural astringent with added antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it a multi-purpose powerhouse for your skin. Lemongrass has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for preventing infections and healing wounds, and scientific research has demonstrated its antibacterial qualities. Organic lemongrass essential oil has purifying properties that make it perfect for skincare. Using lemongrass in your routine will help remove impurities and detoxify your skin, leaving it feeling clean and clear. • 5 Reasons Why You Need Multiple Income Streams If we’ve learned anything in the last decade, it’s that no job is safe. As soon as that reliable 9-5 job disappears, too many people find themselves in serious financial trouble. That’s where having multiple income streams can come in!Millennials and Gen-Zers have a huge opportunity to create multiple streams of income by creating work-from-home jobs that suit their lifestyle. And now, more than ever, having multiple streams of income is a necessity.Check out the five reasons below on why it’s essential that you consider having multiple income streams.#1 Tax BenefitsGone are the days when you could work for a single company for 40 years with the expectation that they would then take care of you until you died. Now, you need to have your own retirement plan. With student loan debt and changes to the job market, we all have to become more self-reliant when it comes to retirement. The new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 actually benefits those who receive income from self-employment through work-from-home jobs and online businesses—if that’s you, take a look at the potential tax benefits! There is a maximum cap, and you should review all the details to see how your tax bill might change. Check out the article What You Need to Know About Side Hustles and Taxes.#2 Long-term WealthMaking money in the short-term is great, but building long-term wealth ensures your family’s security for decades, if not generations. Many work-from-home jobs can be sustainable and scalable income generators.Having multiple income streams can help you build long-term wealth without having to work harder. Instead, you can work smarter and leverage your time to achieve financial freedom. It’s a fact that the work you put in now with your side hustle or online business can have enormous long-term effects.#3 Reducing RiskFailure is always a possibility, but feels even more dangerous to those of us seeking entrepreneurial opportunities. Younger people, too, are less likely to be affected by risks than someone who is older and has more to lose. The best time to take risks is when you’re younger—the more mistakes you make, the more you’ll learn. Having multiple income streams is also helpful for reducing the cost of those mistakes, because it means you always have other resources to fall back on if something doesn’t work out.#4 Job SecurityWhen we think of job security, most of us think of a steady paycheck, social standing, paid days off, and medical benefits. Until recently, job security looked like getting up early, driving to work, climbing the corporate ladder, and retiring somewhere warm. With emerging technology and other changes to the job market, this traditional mindset no longer applies. Increased automation means many formerly steady jobs can no longer offer security. However, when you have multiple streams of income, your job security isn’t tied to a single source of income. Being laid off from one job no longer has to plunge you into financial crisis! Technology has made it possible to build a viable and secure living from the comfort of your own home.Online business owners are also able to benefit from low start-up costs to tap into a variety of markets and to create any number of opportunities for remote work. Each potential job opportunity means a new income stream, and that’s where job security is these days lives: in diversification.#5 Debt RepaymentMillennials graduate with more student loan debt than any prior generation, and because of that fact alone, many young adults are questioning the value of a college degree. For those of us battling with student loans, multiple income streams are essential. The extra income from additional work can help you pay down debt: the more money you have coming in to throw at those loans, the faster they’ll be paid off. Paying off any debt (whether it’s student loans, credit cards, or anything else) is vital to your long-term financial health.Related: 12 Streams of Income to Consider Having Many young people have already had or will experience problems working in a traditional 9-5 setting, whether it’s due to a lack of experience, changes in the job market, or company restructuring. Despite these problems, many people still think working in a traditional job is the only way to earn an income.Having one source of income is good, but having multiple income streams can be even better! In addition to the benefits listed above, having multiple income streams also means you aren’t slaving away for a single company that doesn’t care about you—instead, you get to take ownership of your career.Have you ever had multiple jobs? • 7 Ways to Be More Productive When Working from Home For many of us, working from home is the new normal. Luckily, adapting to our new situation is possible—but no one said it would be simple. Working from home has its ups and its downs! On the one hand, it can be a blessing to have your commute reduced to the distance between your bed and your desk. On the other hand, working and living in the same space can be incredibly frustrating. This new norm can make it difficult to separate your work spaces from your play spaces, and staying productive while working from home is a challenge. If you, like many others, are struggling to stay on top of your to-dos in this new situation, read on. We’ve got seven ways to help you get and stay productive when working from home.#1 Set GoalsSet between 2 and 5 clear, attainable goals each day to help keep from feeling overwhelmed or sinking into a rut. This is my personal strategy, and it works wonders! While there are advantages to working from home, coping with the stress, inconvenience, chaos, and grief brought on by the coronavirus pandemic means we can all benefit from having additional structure. Setting clear goals helps you stay focused and accountable.Setting goals is a best practice no matter what your work setting is, but it’s especially important when you don’t have the social and physical structure of an office, coworkers, or a supervisor. You can set daily, weekly, and even monthly goals according to your work schedule. Make sure you build in enough flexibility to handle any disruption—if we’ve learned anything from the pandemic, it’s that circumstances can change quickly!#2 Don’t be a HermitWorking remotely can become incredibly isolating, and this will have a negative effect on your work. The change from working with your team in-person to working from home with little social interaction can be frustrating, to say the least.Try not to isolate yourself too much, even when you need to hunker down and focus! Though there might not be a friendly face in the cubicle next to yours or down the hall anymore, you can still pick up the phone or fire up Zoom and give your colleagues a call. Remember that some human interaction is always better than no interaction!#3 Give Yourself GraceRemember what life was like when you were working in the office—there was probably a lot of downtime that you didn’t even realize was happening. Your home office should be held to the same standard. Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean you have to be 100% focused 100% of the time.Research shows that the most productive employees take 5- to 17-minute breaks after 25 minutes to an hour of work. These short breaks will help you come back feeling refreshed and ready to focus, so don’t be afraid to take them while working from home!Stepping away from your tasks and your computer screen can actually help you be more productive. Giving yourself a little grace and taking a few minutes to process a new task or agenda item will make you less likely to make mistakes, and keep you feeling more energized throughout the day.#4 Embrace MultitaskingAlthough everyone’s ability to multitask is limited, it is possible to juggle more than one task at a time during the day. For instance, you can put on a Netflix show or podcast in the background while working on manual tasks that don’t require your full attention, or wash some dishes and fold laundry while muted on a conference call.Make note of the times during your day when you have the attention and time to devote to more than one activity, and take advantage of them! You’ll be amazed at how much you can get done.#5 CommunicateWhen in doubt, it’s okay to ask for help! When a process is unclear, or you need clarification on top priorities, or you forgot a detail, just ask!Making the change to working from home means that communication has also changed. You no longer have the option of popping into someone’s office to ask a quick clarifying question, but it’s important to maintain those points of communication so you stay on top of your projects.Communication is more important than ever, and it’s up to everyone—including you—to do their part in communicating effectively. More often than not, someone else on your team will have the exact same question you did, and you’ll learn they were relieved that you asked!Nothing is more annoying than having to redo work because you misunderstood the expectations or missed an important detail. Save yourself the headaches and the time by communicating.#6 Invest in Useful ResourcesThere are so many great resources available to make working from home easier! It’s important to do some research on what tools you could use to boost your productivity.A few great resources include things like Asana for task management, Slack for communication, Zoom for video calls, and Serene for goal-setting and blocking distractions.Along with downloading and using these resources, invest in items that will allow you to work on the go—not just in your home. If you have a smartphone, laptop, car charger, and portable Wi-Fi hotspot, you can work in your back yard, the park, or even your car!#7 Create a Personal WorkspaceNot everyone has a full spare room to flip into a kitted-out home office, but it is important to create a specific work zone. This will signal to your brain—and any quarantine peeps you live with—that you’re on the clock. Check out the article Beautify Your Workspace for some ideas!Get creative: your workspace can be a desk in a guest bedroom, a specific chair and TV tray, or even your bed when the bedroom door is closed. You can signal that you’re on the clock with headphones, a handmade sign, or any other item that signals “do not disturb.” No matter what, make sure you have at least one place you can go when you need a quiet spot for phone calls, meetings, and other virtual appointments.Mentally, having a separate space can help you get into a working mindset, and help create boundaries between work time and downtime. If you have children or other family members around, this is especially important!Related: How to Master Working from Home Remember: if there’s a will, there’s a way. We have always learned to adapt to our environments, and this is no different. Working from home has its drawbacks, but it helps to be optimistic and find ways to stay positive and productive! How are you adjusting to the work from home life? I would hate for you to look up and wonder what you’ve been doing all this time. I want you to look up and realize that you’ve achieved everything you wanted out of life. In order to do that, self-awareness must come first and foremost, and then work. If you’re not sure what your purpose is or what you want your life to truly look like, I have some questions that may help. Sometimes, all we need is a little reflection to get us on the right path towards what we want most. Check out these 7 questions to ask to determine what you want out of life. Give yourself time to honestly answer these questions! #1 What would I like to be doing during retirement? For most of us, retirement is decades away. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t start moving in that direction right now. If you could plan it exactly how you want, what would you be doing during retirement? Do you want to be traveling regularly? Maybe you want to stay put and always have family over. Perhaps you want to have millions of dollars to leave behind to a cause you support. Depending on how you answer this question, you’ll have a better idea of what you should be doing now to get you there. If you know your retirement is filled with travel and luxury, you’ll need to up your retirement savings right now. This could mean some sacrificing now so you have it to enjoy it later. If your retirement will be more low key, you can focus your extra money on other things. #2 What is my love language? If you haven’t taken the Love Language test yet, I strongly suggest you do. Finding out your love language as early as possible allows you to express to others what you need to feel loved and show love. You’ll have a better understanding of yourself and what you need. You can use this information to share with others and ensure you’re fulfilled in your relationships. Love languages aren’t just for romantic relationships, either. The way you give and receive love trickles into every relationship you have—platonic or otherwise. Knowing your love language brings an added layer of self-awareness, which is the key to seeking happiness. #3 What impact would I like to have? Everyone will answer this question differently, and that’s perfectly okay. Maybe you’ll want to help thousands of people, which you can do by starting a business or non-profit organization. Maybe you’ll want to be the best parent you can be, which you can do by focusing your energy on your family. Maybe you’ll want to help people financially, which you can do through donations and charity. The point is to think about what type of impact would make you feel whole and purposeful. I believe we’re all put on this earth to make a difference, and that difference can take the form of helping one living thing or thousands. When you know the impact you’d like to have, you can start doing things that will help you leave that impact. You can act with the intention of having that impact on others. This will leave you feeling fulfilled at the end of your days. #4 What are my core values and beliefs? This is such an important question to ask, yet very few of us actually take the time to understand what our values and beliefs are. When you know your core values and beliefs, you can act in integrity with those values and beliefs. You can also rid people of your life whose values don’t match up with yours—or, at least, proceed with caution around them! When I say “core values and beliefs”, I’m referring to the key principles you stand by. Do you value honesty? Do you believe in treating others how you want to be treated? This is another question that will have different answers for everyone. The point is to identify your core values and beliefs and start living a life centered on them. #5 If money was no object, what would I be doing? What a fun question to answer! Not only is it fun to think about what your life would look like if money was no object, but it helps you pinpoint the things that bring you joy! If money was no object, what would you be doing? Would you be helping others? Would you still be working? Perhaps you’d be traveling regularly. I challenge you to get deep here, and have fun. The goal is to understand what brings you joy, whether it requires money or not. When you know what brings you joy, you can start putting yourself in a position to consistently seek out those things. #6 What am I most passionate about? I understand that this may be a tough question, especially if you haven’t really thought about what you’re passionate about. However, now’s the time to finally give it some thought. People can be passionate about a variety of things. For example, I’m passionate about inspiring positive change in others. Other people may be passionate about animals, or children, or money. There’s no right or wrong answer here, only the answer that serves you. As with the other questions, once you know what you’re passionate about, you can start working towards having those things in your life regularly. #7 Do I like to live in the moment or plan ahead? I ask this final question because it’ll help give you insight into how you operate. If you’re a person who likes to live in the moment, you’ll have to work a little harder to have a plan in place for your life. If you’re a person who likes to plan ahead, you’ll have to remember to be mindful of your day-to-day activities. Regardless of which option you prefer, you can still get what you want out of life. You can still put yourself in a position to have everything you desire—especially when you know what those desires are! I’m rooting for you and the life of your dreams!
