Winter Hair Care Requirements

It’s finally starting to cool down in Austin, Texas where City Girl Savings is headquartered, but for you east coast girls it’s probably been cool for a while. We’ve talked about Protecting Your Skin from the Cold, but there are certain precautions you should take to protect your hair from the cold too. The CGS Team is sharing a few basic winter hair care requirements to follow in the cold winter months.

Winter hair care

Start Winter with a Trim

Trims are a good thing, even if you are trying to grow your hair out. Trims help keep your locks their healthier by nipping split ends in the bud. Left alone, split ends can work their way up your strands, causing thin, wispy looking hair. Trims also help even out your length so growth can occur everywhere, not simply certain places.  Getting rid of any split ends before heading into the winter season will help set the tone for a healthy head of hair through the cold.

Deep Condition Weekly

This winter, make it a habit to deep condition your hair weekly with a mask.  We love Neutrogena’s Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask because it contains 3 essential oils for your hair, without weighing it down. Going from cold weather outside to overheated air inside can stress your hair out. Giving it the moisture it needs to battle the elements will help keep your hair in tip-top shape.

Don’t Go Outside with Wet Hair

We probably sound like your mom, but it’s true! Not only can going outside with freshly showered and damp hair lead to a cold, it can lead to frozen strands that can break off.  Avoid that altogether by taking your showers at night, or blow drying your hair completely before heading out.  If you prefer to style your hair in the morning, make sure to use the right products to protect your hair from the heat.

Go for Silk

Take Allure Magazine’s advice and incorporate a silk scarf into your winter-accessory selection.  “Winter hats are a fashion statement and a cold-weather necessity, but all the different materials mixed with dry air can cause friction that leads to static, and even worse, breakage. So before you put on that hat, try wrapping your hair with a silk scarf to protect it from harm.”

Protect Your Scalp

Great, healthy hair starts at the scalp. Cold weather can be very drying, especially on your scalp. Trade in your normal shampoo for dandruff-fighting Head and Shoulders for the holiday season. Not only will you notice less flakes, but your scalp will be healthy enough to withstand the colder months. Plus, the brand now comes with yummy scents that leave a fragrance behind!

Your hair doesn’t have to go dry and limp during the winter! Take good care of it by following our tips above. What do you do to keep your hair healthy during the colder months? Do you have any home remedies to protect your hair? Post a comment below to share your thoughts!
