As a New Yorker, I absolutely confirm the stereotype that we only wear all-black! I would say 90% of my clothes are black. Summer is no exception, all black everything! This color makes anyone’s body look sleek and chic. There is no wrong way to wear black and that’s what makes it so perfect. Any body type, any skin color, any style personality – clothing in black does not disappoint.
While black is a wonderful color to wear, there’s a misconception that black is way too hot to put on during the stifling-hot summer season. Not true! Here are five ways I get away with wearing black, without sweating like crazy, in the summer.
Show Some Skin
If you are outside most of the day, with the sun blazing, black can feel too heavy. Pick black pieces that show a little skin! Whether it’s a halter-style dress, or black linen shorts, don’t be afraid to keep it light. You won’t be the only one outside with their skin showing!
Loose Silhouettes
Wearing loose fitting clothes is the gateway to getting away with wearing black in the summer. My favorite black piece for the summer is Gaucho pants because they fit loose, making it much easier to feel the cool breeze. Tight black fabrics, like leggings, will make you sweat because the color attracts the sun. By the end of the day you’ll be looking as sweaty as you feel; something I’m sure all of us would like to avoid.
Perfect Fabrics
Wearing the right fabrics in the summer will make all the difference, regardless of the color! Try to avoid nylons, polyesters, and silk. Any perspiration, especially in black, sticks out like a sore thumb. Instead go for fabrics with cotton, linen, and rayon. These fabrics either absorb or wick away sweat and heat, keeping you as cool as reasonably possible.
Get Lacey
What better way to wear black and feel sexy at the same time than with lace! From shirts and shorts to dresses and skirts, lace is perfect for the summer. Lace is extremely breathable and when worn right looks great. A great outfit would be a fit and flare skirt with an off-the-shoulder black lace top, pair it with a bold lip and you’ll be ready for anything.
All About Accessories
I have more black purses than I can count on my fingers and toes. Adding black accessories to your summer outfit is a great way to incorporate the color without worrying about overheating. Plus, black accessories match with just about everything! You won’t ever go wrong picking a black jeweled necklace or even a choker.

It’s very hot in Texas too, but that doesn’t stop me from wearing black! I love lightweight dresses and linen shorts in black. @nyamir I’m curious to hear your favorite summer pieces in black!
Absolutely, black is everything no matter the season! During the heat wave weather, which is about now, I love wearing loose tanks and leggings. Dresses are always my quick go to as well.
I was born and raised in NY but live in Florida now. Fourteen years later I’m still wearing mostly black but it’s all about light weight fabrics! You can take the girl out of NY but you can’t take NY out of the girl. =)
I couldn’t agree more! I recently went to Florida and I was all about dresses and light weight fabrics.
