So, let me explain how the idea for this article came about…I’ve lived 187 lives already haha! I say this because I just decided that I’m going to write a book about my life someday, and…my network is wild! Whether I meet people through work, hobbies and interests (Hey, my K-pop friends with rich relatives 😂), church, the gym, or anywhere.
Seriously, the diversity within everyone that I know and have connections with is wild. I need to take advantage of this fact (meaning tapping my power as a connector goddess who can help others as well).
As someone who has had the unique privilege (and occasional perplexities of “WTH, you have an elevator in your house?” moments) of working closely with the upper-wallet folks, I’ve collected an arsenal of lessons, anecdotes, and “Ohhhh Sh*t!” moments that I can’t wait to share with you.
Ok, I just wanted to get that out of the way, so let’s dive into the bougie world of affluence with…
5 Lessons I Learned While Working with Rich People
#1 Time is Money…and Time Can Be Bought!
Listen, this takes on a whole new meaning when you’re in the company of those who are living in monetary abundance. Time isn’t just valuable; it’s as precious and rare as diamond-studded earrings. From meticulously planned schedules to lightning-fast decision-making, the rich have mastered the art of squeezing every drop of productivity out of their waking hours.
And let me tell you, not only that but they are also big on “Working smarter, not harder”, and they know how to delegate and outsource tasks so that they can get time back to be productive. Basically so more money can be created! I cannot wait to have regular cleaning services, laundry drop-off service, and a chef so I can get my valuable diamond-studded time back!
#2 The Power of Networking (and Net Worth)
Ever heard the phrase, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? Well, when you’re in the orbit of the wealthy, it’s both. Networking isn’t just a casual exchange of business cards over lukewarm coffee; it’s a finely choreographed dance of power, influence, and, occasionally, lavish Christmas parties in a private Speakeasy downtown (yes, that happened). Working with the affluent has taught me that relationships truly are the currency of success, and a well-connected LinkedIn network can open doors that not even a golden key could unlock.
#3 Humility and Gratitude – like PB&J
For those who eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (I’m allergic to peanuts, but I swear folks live by this combo lol) …this is what humility and gratitude are for the affluent (and should be for everyone, regardless). Despite their vast wealth and influence, many rich individuals possess a remarkable sense of humility and gratitude that serves as a guiding light in their lives.
Whether it’s expressing appreciation for their success, acknowledging the contributions of others, or lending a helping hand to those in need, the rich understand that true greatness is measured not by the size of one’s bank account, but by the depth of one’s character (Preach). Working alongside them has taught me that no matter how high we climb, it’s essential to remain grounded, humble, and forever gracious for the blessings that enrich our lives each day.
#4 The Importance of Giving Back
Contrary to popular belief, a lot of affluent individuals have hearts of gold (okay, perhaps platinum lol). Working closely with philanthropists has shown me that, for many, wealth isn’t just about accumulating possessions—it’s about making a meaningful impact on the world. From funding education initiatives to supporting environmental causes, the rich often use their resources for the greater good, proving that with great wealth comes even greater responsibility.
#5 Money Can’t Buy Happiness, But It Can Buy a Really Nice Boat on Lake Michigan
Does money truly buy happiness? Well, while it might not guarantee eternal bliss, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a yacht-sized safety net. Working with the affluent has taught me that while material possessions may bring temporary joy, true happiness comes from meaningful relationships, personal growth, and a healthy dose of perspective. I even wrote about that perspective in another CGS article 😊.
I remember working with an attorney who owned a small yacht on Lake Michigan (Chicago aye), and when he told me this, I was just in awe and started asking questions about how long, and how many times he takes it out in the summer. Y’all…his response was, “Hardly ever, but my wife and kids sure enjoy it on my hard-earned money”. Ohh, umm…I’m sorry (?) awkward. Man, ALWAYS remember to enjoy what you’ve worked so hard for.
While I may never own a fleet of sports cars (Baby, I want a private island with a chef instead), I’ll always cherish the laughter, camaraderie, and priceless memories shared with those who have generously welcomed me into their world. Remember, whether you’re counting pennies or sipping champagne, the journey is always richer when shared with a smile with loved ones 😀.
