Zillow has teamed up with City Girl Savings to show our readers the top 10 U.S. cities where millennials are living alone. Many of you independent ladies may already be living alone in these cities! See what Miriam Bornstein of Zillow had to share...
"Across the U.S., almost 9 percent of millennials live alone, a number that's been declining since 2005, likely due to unaffordable rents and rising home prices. Zillow recently revealed data indicating metros with the highest percentage of millennials living alone. Austin ranks eighth, trailing behind metros like Richmond, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, to name a few.
In Austin, 13 percent of millennials live on their own with a median income of $40,000 a year. At this salary, millennials are able to afford 1.5 percent of homes. However, job growth is at an all-time high, with year-over-year employment increasing at 4.6 percent, much higher than the nine other cities on the list. While Austin has promising job growth, residents spend 31 percent of income on rent, so it may be wiser to live with roommates to reduce living expenses."
Looks like Richmond, Virginia takes the lead! Just about all of the cities with the highest population of millennials who live alone are on the East Coast and in the Midwest/South.
