Networking Basics: 4 Great Conversation Starters

We all know the Power of Networking. Networking can lead to a new job, new clients, new friends and new mentors! Networking can also help get you out of your comfort zone and grow as an individual.  We know that we should be networking, but are we making the most of it when we do? The CGS Team is sharing 4 great conversation starters to use at your next networking event or mixer. Opt for these introductions to get the most out of the conversation with a new person.

#1: “What are You Passionate About?”

This is one of the best conversation starters because it gives you a great idea of where the person’s passions are. You can use their response to determine where it aligns with what you are trying to accomplish.  This question is better than the standard “What do you do?” because the person may be sharing their true passion or side business, as opposed to their actual day job.

#2: Start with a Compliment

“I just wanted to say that I love your shoes, where did you get them?” or “That drink looks delicious, what is it?” or any other compliment is a great way to get the conversation started. Everyone loves a compliment, especially when they get to talk about it after. Start by giving the compliment on something you like or find interesting, then ask a question about it.  The conversation will start on a positive note and can lead into other discussions simply by the answers.

#3: “What are You Hoping to Get out of this Event?”

Not only does this question give the person you’re talking to something to think about before responding, it allows you the ability to gauge the person’s interest and see if there are any mutual takeaways.  Have your response to this question ready, as you are likely to get the same question thrown your way after the person responds.  Keep the conversation going by referring the person to any other people you have met who may be able to help them get what they need.

#4: “Do You Know Anyone Here?”

If you are attending a networking event outside of work or an organization, this conversation starter can have a big impact. If the person you are talking to responds saying they know a few people, you can ask what those people do and introduce yourself to them later.  If the person says they don’t know anyone, and you do, you can share a few tidbits about the people you know.  You can also offer to introduce them, after your conversation.  This makes you look like a team player and shows genuineness.

Networking can be easy, especially if you have your general questions handy. However, make the experience more memorable for you by asking questions that peak the speaker’s interest and gets them out of the routine of always answering the same questions! If you hear any unique questions, keep them in your back pocket for later! Are there any unique networking conversation starters you use? What’s your take on networking and approaching new people? 1. I love the thought of approaching someone with a compliment. It’s extremely easy to say something nice to someone and makes them happy to continue the conversation.
